A few years back I devoted my life to protecting an ideal that is important to us all. Freedom.
On this day 150 years ago President Abraham Lincoln changed the course of history by giving that freedom to an entire race of people.
It's almost impossible to imagine what my life would have been like if I were born 200 years earlier. My skin color would have kept me from doing the job that I love, from being a husband, from owning property, and from protecting my children. Instead, for know other reason than I am a man of African decent born in America, I would have been nothing more than property.
The Emancipation Proclamation changed the history of, not only the black race, but the world. Without it, so many important contributions to mankind would have been stifled by oppression. Though the struggle for equality would last for over century, the first step to a better world started with this declaration of freedom. We must not forget the importance of what happened on this day.
